May Helmet Ka Pa Ba?

We've been playing 90s songs (a playlist from my phone) at the office this week. The beat is so distinct but at times when you listen to it, you're more into dancing than really knowing what the song really means. And yes, The Sign by Ace of Base is soooooooooo 90's but it's only now that I got to really listen to the lyrics. It's a song for those who finally realized that an ex-lover/lover is not worth loving at all (para sa mga natanggal na ang helmet haha). Good good good song I should say. This deserves to have a good cover version. Well, I saw this video on YouTube, it would be better if this will be officially recorded. This is a cover by Nice Peter. Thank heavens for giving me the sign I needed! =P

I got a new life
You would hardly recognize me
I’m so glad
How can a person like me care for you

Why do I bother
When you’re not the one for me
Is enough enough

I saw the sign and it opened up my eyes
I saw the sign
Life is demanding without understanding

I saw the sign and it opened up my eyes
I saw the sign
No one’s gonna drag you up
To get into the light where you belong
But where do you belong?

Under the pale moon
For so many years I’ve wondered
Who you are
How can a person like you bring me joy

Under the pale moon
Where I see a lot of stars
Is enough enough

I saw the sign and it opened up my eyes
I saw the sign
Life is demanding without understanding

I saw the sign and it opened up my eyes
I saw the sign
No one’s gonna drag you up
To get into the light where you belong
But where do you belong?

I saw the sign and it opened up my mind
And I am happy now
Living without you
I’ve left you all alone

I saw the sign and it opened up my eyes
I saw the sign
No one’s gonna drag you up
To get into the light where you belong
I saw the sign and it opened up my eyes
I saw the sign

5...4...3...2...1...

Deadlines. Either you make it on or before the deadline else, your dead. We encounter deadlines EVERY SINGLE DAY. It just hides itself in the form of beating the clock when you're running late, when a visitor is coming in 5 minutes and you still have not taken a bath and your house is a mess, meeting targets on the specified time at work, beating the red light, patients confined in an ICU in need of type AB blood in 4 hours, a girl given a week to decide to choose between two guys, athletes who want to top the world record and a whole lot more. Everybody's rushing when you hear the word deadline.

Now deadlines are ruling my life ever since I decided to go back to school. I'm working and I'm studying at the same time. I'm lucky enough to have 4 hours of sleep. My room's a mess. My vision's getting worse. I don't have much appetite. I see numbers and variables when I sleep. Every week is a nightmare. I feel that I only have 4 days a week, 16 days a month and 192 days a year. I even find texting tiring to do now. Normally, I reply within an hour or two. But now, it takes around close to 36 hours before you receive a reply from me.

Stressful as it may sound. This is the time when even the slightest, tiniest, micro-sized stuff makes me jump for joy. I didn't notice its benefit before but I'm glad that my parents enrolled me in a chinese school during my elementary days and got to learn a bit of "chinese mathematics" as a kid. Because if not, it would be doubly hard for me to get past my assignments now. It's really helping me a lot. Food? Yes! it makes me happy now. When I'm cramming and I don't have the appetite or I just simply forgot to buy food, even FITA biscuits tastes like heaven to me. And the good news for the day, when I only have less than 6 hours to finish answering questions which makes my neurons commit harakiri, came from my Prof in Discrete Mathematics: Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

2 more days! It's like two years for me. Whew.

But then I realized, deadlines are not that bad. Why?

Because there has to be something that will make you start and do what you have to do. And..there has to be something that will make you stop and give up what you can no longer do.

Wala Kayo sa Lolo Ko!

"There was a man who complained because he had no shoes until he met a man who had no feet."

True enough, we have no right to complain. But sometimes, reading sayings like this will just make you realize it for a minute or two. The following day, you'll complain again. But what if, you encounter real people who are so poor but they do not complain?

I rarely watch TV because of my uber hectic schedule but last saturday, I decided to watch TV, surfed channels and Howie Severino's Sine Totoo on GMA-7 caught my wandering attention. The episode was about a segment from Vicky Morales' Wish Ko Lang featuring Jan Pabilona, an 82-year old lolo from Cavite. With only 50 pesos to spend, he goes to Baclaran from Cavite then he walks all the way to Ortigas. He goes there to look for jobs. He does this every single day just to find a job or even get hired for just one day so he can feed his family. Even if he gets turned down which happens most of the time, he doesn't feel bad about it.

The second story is about a 73 year-old blind man from Bicol who feeds his sick wife and 3 deaf-mute children by carrying pails of water on his shoulder and delivering it to different houses. He's earning 35 pesos a day which allows him to buy 1 kilo of rice and dried fish for his family.

Do watch these 4 videos I got from YouTube showing their stories.

The things that we ignore and take for granted may be someone else's dream. If you only have 500 pesos in your pocket and you complain that you no longer have enough money till your next payday, think about the people who are earning less than 500 a month to feed a family of 8. If you are complaining about your job, imagine yourself without it.

An eye-opener indeed. We have no right to complain. When bad things happen, we have to appreciate what we have and we have to count our blessings. We always have to remember that there are people who are not as blessed as we are and yet..they do not complain. They just let things be.
